TA Day 124
TA Day 124: Monday 21 April 2025
Ahipara - Hukatere (Hukatere Lodge)
We had breakfast at the holiday park before leaving. It was both sunny and raining during it. This kind of weather continued on the beach but later the sun won the battle.
After 10 km we decided to walk barefoot which was very nice after having had our feet stuck in wet shoes for so many days now, but it was also a bit hard on our feet since the sand here on 90 Mile Beach is really hard and our feet aren’t used to walking barefoot for so long.
As we walked on a beach there were lots of cars driving around and people out fishing. At one point we passed some teenagers having a “party” on the beach, and they gave us some beer and vodka soda. So Lukas got a bit drunk on the beach as “he had to” drink both.
Later in the afternoon we walked past a fisherman just as he got something on his hook! We stopped to watch and saw that it was a big fish! But we were quickly informed by the fisherman that this was just a “small” snapper. Wonder how big a big one is…
Our feet were now really sore and we kind of regretted walking barefoot for so long, but we still stayed barefoot all the way to tonight’s campground, which we reached just after sunset. We arrived about 20 minutes before 19:00, so a little earlier than we had said to the owner when we had called in the morning. Pretty good guess!
We walked over to the “reception” which was the same building that had the tiny kitchen and a table. There we spent some time talking to some other people that were staying there, and they were super nice! Even gave us some food, and the owner of the campground had given us a beer and soda to drink.
After pitching our tent we made our own meal as well, then took a shower - the last one before we are finished, and went to bed.
